The program of multi-disciplinary and comparative research in the area of international affairs concerns above all the issues pertaining to contemporary Polish foreign policy, Poland's membership in the EU and NATO; Poland's bilateral relations, in particular with neighbouring countries, and the image of Poland in the world. Nonproliferation/Disarmament
PISM conducts research in the field of nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction (with a special emphasis on nuclear weapons), the operation of the nonproliferation regimes, missile defence, disarmament, and activities of NATO and EU in this field.

"Eastern Europe/Eurasia" programme of PISM Research Office delivers studies on foreign, security and energy policies of the former Soviet republics. The latters' relations with the European Union, NATO and regional cooperation within the Commonwealth of Independent States area belong to priorities of the expertise.
International economic relations and energy security
Coordinator: Ernest Wyciszkiewicz
Program focuses on events and processes important for the global economy and the main institutions of multilateral cooperation in this field (WTO, IMF, G8, G20). Issues such as climate change or energy security are also monitored in the context of their impact on regional and global politics. The analysts look into the evolution of the international position of the new centers of economic development, first of all China. Within this program, PISM researchers analyze also the legal aspects of the foreign policy of Poland (incl. UN mechanisms).
Bilateral relations and subregional cooperation in Europe
Within the scope of this programme we prepare analyses, expert reports and papers on Polish bilateral relations with European countries. We conduct both interdisciplinary and comparative research studies on bilateral relations in
European Union
Within the framework of this programme our research portfolio concerns mainly European policies of the EU member states. We are mostly interested in domestic application and implementation of European policies by the EU member states as well as in the positions they take while working within the EU institutions. In particular our research focuses on: the Lisbon Strategy, problems of EU institutions and the institutional reform, acquis communautaire including its part on agriculture and rural areas as well as the EU enlargement process and its consequences.
