The Polish Institute of International Affairs

The Polish Institute of International Affairs Act of Parliament 1996 established the Institute to carry on research and provide expertise in international affairs, run courses for public servants, inform the public, co-operate with political, research and/or teaching organisations in Poland and abroad, maintain a library (open to the public, 165 thousand books and journals), organize conferences, publish books, periodicals and documents on the Polish foreign policy and related matters.

The previously existing Institute (namesake, est. 1949) was closed down in 1995. The new Institute is a state entity and a legal person. The funding comes from the Budget, The State Committee for Scientific Research, and private sponsors. The first director was appointed by the Prime Minister for 1999-2004. Employs fifty eight individuals.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs supervises the Institute and appoints the Institute’s Advisory Council, including seven renowned acadamics and experts in international relations. A bi-monthly publication: "Polski Przegląd Dyplomatyczny" (The Polish Diplomatic Review); "EVROPA" – a quarterly in Russian; a quarterly "The Polish Foreign Affairs Digest. English Language Versions of Papers Published in Polski Przegląd Dyplomatyczny and other journals in Poland".
